Best Birds Thursday #11

April 24, 2014

The Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) is still hanging around the house here in New Braunfels, Texas... competing with the Cardinals for the loudest song.

The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) definitely wins the award for having the most swag in his step! He hunts for bugs, and then proudly sits out on our poolside recliner waiting for everyone to see what he caught. Only once everyone has seen... will he fly into the Jasmine bush to feed the babies.

Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus forficatus) are so much fun to watch. They are so tropical, vocal, acrobatic and unique.

The usual Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)

... and on to a new lifer for me... although it is not by any means uncommon. Spotted a House Wren (Troglodytes aedon)! Usually, I see the Carolina and Bewicks Wrens... but this House Wren was a new one for me.

... and yet another new lifer for me... a Lark Sparrow (Chondestes grammacus)

He was really neat to watch... interesting facial markings, larger than most sparrows and was kind of a loner!
